On this day in history: June 18, 1178.  Five monks at Canterbury report something exploding on the moon shortly after sunset. 🔭

Some scientists have proposed that this may have been the formation of the Giordano Bruno crater—however, that’s located on the FAR side. So it shouldn’t have been observable. An alternate theory suggests it was a meteor hitting Earth’s atmosphere near the Moon – creating the illusion that it happened on the Moon. 🌒
