Last night, my father and I had another fight. This one felt heavier, angrier than before. He came into my room with a tray of food, but this time, there was no silence. His face was red, his hands trembling as he slammed the tray down on the table.
“That’s it, Anika,” he started, his voice shaking with anger. “I can’t do this anymore. Look at you. You’re doing nothing to help yourself. You’re only making things worse. You’re killing yourself, and I refuse to stand by and watch it happen.”
His voice was trembling, not just with anger but with desperation. I took a deep breath, even though it was an effort, and replied, my voice calm but cutting:
“This is my life, Dad. Not yours. Yes, I depend on you. Yes, I live like this. But this is exactly what I want. And you can’t change that.”
That’s when he exploded.
“Can’t change it? Is that what you think? That I’m just going to keep feeding you, taking care of you, while you destroy your body? You want to know what I’m going to do? I’m going to take you back to the hospital. Let them deal with you, because clearly, you can’t make any decisions to save yourself.”
I looked at him, a small, almost mocking smile playing on my lips. I knew he wouldn’t do it. He had threatened this before. And every time, he came back with another tray, another meal.
“The hospital?” I said, my voice almost amused. “Go ahead, Dad. Do it. But we both know you won’t. You’ll never stop feeding me. You’ll never stop coming back. Because no matter what, you can’t let go.”
His hands shook with frustration, but he had no reply. He knew I was right. After a long silence, he finally said:
“You think this is a game, Anika? You think I’m just going to sit here and watch? You’re destroying yourself, and there’s nothing I can do to stop you. But I won’t let you drag me down with you any longer.”
Then he stormed out, slamming the door behind him.
But a few hours later, as always, he came back. Another tray, another plate of food. He set it down without a word, not even looking at me. I could see the anger simmering beneath his silence, but I also knew he’d never stop. He’d keep coming, keep bringing me what I needed, even if he didn’t understand why.
And me? I just sat there, savoring every bite, feeling that familiar satisfaction wash over me. My father might never understand, and maybe it’s better that way. But I know what I want. I know who I am. And no matter his words, his threats, or his despair, I won’t stop.
Because this is my life, my body, and my hunger. And nothing and no one can take that away from me 🤷🏼♀️
