Sky High Confessional #29 - How I deal with loneliness

One thing I've learned from doing this for a while now is that loneliness is a lot more common than I ever realised. Whether you're a creator or not, I think most of us experience it from time to time. The funny thing is, I have so much love in my life. Not a day goes by that I'm not grateful that I get to do this, travel the world, create content, and have so many of you supporting me. But every now and then, the loneliness monster still shows up.

This weekend it caught me by surprise. I was on my way to New Zealand, making content for my travel page, something I genuinely love doing, but despite that, I started feeling really isolated. Maybe it was because I'd had a couple of wines on the flight. Maybe it was just one of those days. Either way, the feeling was there all the same.

My first instinct was to do a bit of journaling and some meditating. They're usually the things that help me reset, and they did help a little, but not really in the way they normally do. The feeling was still there.

When I landed, I found myself reaching for "the apps." Not because I was necessarily looking for a hookup, but because I think I was really searching for connection. Then about 30 seconds in I realised I didn't actually have the emotional energy for that. Meeting someone new means chatting, getting to know each other, and investing yourself in another interaction. As much as I enjoy that sometimes, I just didn't have it in me.

So instead, I tried something different. I opened X and started reading through the comments on some of my posts. I don't always stop to do that, but it reminded me why I'm doing all of this in the first place. I guess this reminded me of where I've come from over the past few years and the community behind the screen. Celebrating that, even just quietly to myself, helped more than I expected.

Then this morning, I had the strange gift of a whole day to myself at Auckland Airport. I reconnected with a couple of close friends. Nothing profound, just a bit of banter over text, but it reminded me that I wasn't actually alone. Oh and did a bit of my favourite hobby, planespotting (pictured hehe)...More than anything, I gave myself permission to just be for a while instead of trying to force myself to feel different.

Did it magically solve the loneliness? No. But it did remind me that feelings don't last forever. Years ago, someone shared a piece of advice with me that has stuck ever since: just hold on until the scenery changes. Sometimes that's literal. Sometimes it's emotional. Either way, if you can give yourself a bit of space, reconnect with the people and the purpose that matter to you, those feelings often pass on their own.

If you've been feeling lonely lately, I hope this reminds you that you're definitely not the only one. And if you've ever watched a video, left a comment, or simply followed along on this journey, thank you. You probably don't realise it, but you've helped me more than you know.
