Sky High Confessional #21 What it's really like to shoot studio porn
Back in the US this week has been my second go round shooting studio scenes. I've been asked a bunch lately what it's like having sex for work vs play, so I thought this week I’d dive a little further into the process of shooting studio porn.
Firstly, something that surprised me is that production scheduling varies a lot between studios. Some plan months in advance and others much closer, like days out. Generally they will give you a heads up of who you're shooting with and position, although for one of my scenes this week I wrongly assumed I was bottoming and it turned out I was topping, which felt like a bit of an amateur mistake on my part.
I've shot scenes where there is wardrobe and more of a storyline, which can be fun, including a cops locker room this week, and others without a particular storyline.
Usually the call time is in the morning and once you get there there's lots of paperwork to do before any camera comes out. Consent, boundary checklists, etc. The production crews, usually two on set, I've worked with have always been great and encouraging. The vibe with co performers varies a lot. I've found there are quite a few straight guys doing gay porn which makes it feel more functional than shooting with another gay performer.
The actual filming is very different to how you'd normally have sex. Usually we shoot a position for three to five minutes, then do still images, before moving on to the next one. Sometimes we do multiple takes. This week I wasn’t paying attention to my hand which completely got in the way of seeing the penetration. You also need to stay hard for a lot of this time, which isn’t always usually the case when bottoming normally.
How long it all takes varies a lot. It can be as little as three and a half hours or blow out to nine hours, which was my longest. It’s really satisfying when you wrap though. Usually the first order of business is food, followed by a shower and then rest.
You never really know when the scene will drop. It can be weeks or a year or more. When my first scene dropped I had a big celebration, but now it feels more similar to a regular collab release.
So yeah, it's full on but definitely an experience that I’m really glad to have had.
