The first time I picked up a flight attendant onboard
After all these years in the air, countless long hauls, lounges, layovers, and side eye flirtations, I never thought this would actually happen.
Last week, somewhere over the US, it finally did.
I was flying transcontinental in domestic business class. One of those perfectly pleasant flights where I was passing time eating and watching TV (pictured lol) and nothing remarkable is supposed to happen. The cabin manager was a fabulous Black woman with immaculate energy, and we bonded early over travel stories, including the fact we’d both been in Brazil over New Year’s. The vibe was warm, relaxed, easy.
It was a 777, so plenty of crew moving through the cabin, but it wasn’t until halfway through the flight that I noticed him. Handsome. Muscular. Quietly confident. The kind of guy who somehow commands attention just by walking the aisle.
A couple of hours before landing, I asked for a coffee and of course he was the one who brought it over. We chatted. Nothing dramatic. Just one of those conversations that feels natural in a way you don’t expect at 35,000 feet. A look held a second longer than necessary. A smile that lingered.
And then nothing.
Until just before descent.
The cabin manager came over to my seat, leaned in, and said, “I want to play matchmaker.”
She brought him back. We exchanged details. Just like that.
I had an eight hour layover in LA, so after re checking my bags, I jumped in an Uber and met him at his hotel. We went for a walk, that quiet, electric kind where you both know exactly why you’re there. It ended with a very sweet, very satisfying make out session that felt equal parts unexpected and inevitable.
We swapped details properly this time. And yes, I’ll be quite happy to see him in Sydney…
Turns out, sometimes the universe does clear you for landing right when you least expect it.
