On this day in history, construction began on the Louisiana Superdome. They swap out the names of the Superdome based on the highest bidder (right now it's the Caesar's Superdome but before that it was Mercedes-Benz Superdome) and is a feat of engineering. It's literally an enclosed dome with interchangeable fields, stands, stages, etc to accommodate whatever's booked in the arena.

A fun fact - the astroturf used in the football field flooring was custom made and they called it "Mardi Grass."
