Puerta Vallarta is a city founded upon the struggle to survive HIV, a place where the great Patron Saint of the Gays, Elizabeth Taylor welcomed us to be free. A profoundly spiritual place where disparate cultures across the globe come together as one to celebrate men loving men in a world not for us. It has become a mecca of-sorts founded upon the beauty of our survival, the men who came here to live a little longer with medicine denied to us elsewhere, and fucking each other in the sun before it was too late. It was recently World AIDS Day and I reflect on Elizabeth Taylor, her AIDS foundation, her contribution to this city, to making us feel a little safer in a dangerous world. But most of all I celebrate our resilience as a people. Our love for each other knows no borders, no language, no rules. I hold Puerto Vallarta in my heart, forever grateful for all the opportunities this city has given me, catapulting me into the stratosphere and fantasy of gay erotic cinema, and also teaching me some very real, invaluable, hard lessons along the way too. I love you Puerto Vallarta, and I salut the powerful gay men who work(ed) here to make us feel seen and heard, respected and celebrated. Here, we are forever watched over by those men who didn’t make it. They protect us. They cheer on our sexual voracity in perpetuity,, always, siempre.
